Holocaust ghettos weren’t just holding areas — they were deliberately designed spaces of starvation, control, and ultimately, mass murder. Its origins can be traced back to the 1500s in. Ghetto, formerly a street, or quarter, of a city set apart as a legally enforced residence area for jews.

In 1541, the quarter was enlarged to cover the neighboring ghetto vecchio, and in 1633, the ghetto nuovissimo was also added.
